Year 6 reading comprehension
Free reading comprehension for Year 6 pupils (ages 10 - 11). Every passage is followed by multiple-choice questions with explanations that show exactly where the answer sits in the text - great practice for KS2 SATs.
Skills covered in Year 6
- Drawing inferences and justifying with evidence - the KS2 SATs bread and butter
- Analysing how structure and language build meaning
- Summarising longer passages precisely
Sample passage
For centuries, the island of Surtsey did not exist. Then, on a cold November morning in 1963, fishermen off the south coast of Iceland saw the sea begin to boil. A column of smoke rose from the waves, and by the following day, black rock had broken the surface. Within a week, the new island was taller than a house. Today, only a handful of scientists are allowed to visit - everyone else must watch from the mainland as nature slowly claims it.
Verbao generates a fresh passage at the Year 6 reading level every time your child plays - so no answer memorising, and no two sessions the same.
Tips for parents
- SATs reading papers demand pace - time your child on a passage now and then.
- Talk about the difference between retrieval questions ('what happened?') and inference questions ('why?').
- Verbao's readability score can show whether a text is pitched at Year 6 level.
