Year 5 reading comprehension

Free reading comprehension for Year 5 pupils (ages 9 - 10). Every passage is followed by multiple-choice questions with explanations that show exactly where the answer sits in the text - great practice for KS2 SATs.

Skills covered in Year 5

  • Distinguishing between fact and opinion in non-fiction
  • Comparing characters, settings and events across texts
  • Identifying how language contributes to meaning (metaphor, simile)

Sample passage

The library was quiet, but not empty. Elena slid the atlas back onto its shelf and glanced around. Every table was taken. Some students wore headphones and typed; others sat with piles of books, chewing pens. At the back, near the tall window, a boy was staring not at his laptop but at her - and when she caught his eye, he looked away too quickly.

Verbao generates a fresh passage at the Year 5 reading level every time your child plays - so no answer memorising, and no two sessions the same.

Tips for parents
  • SATs practice benefits from short, frequent sessions - Verbao passages are perfect warm-ups.
  • Discuss the author's choices: why 'quiet, but not empty' rather than 'silent'?
  • Encourage your child to underline the evidence in the text when giving an answer.
